It is very common for someone to experience knee pain, at least once in their lifetime. You may wonder what causes that condition. Among the various reasons, there are 3 most common causes of knee pain that may have led to the pain.
Arthritis
There are several types of Arthritis, some of which can lead to knee pain.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a common cause of knee pain. It is sometimes called degenerative arthritis. Over time, your knee loose flexibility and become stiff as well as painful. The surfaces of the knee then became damaged and you feel pain when you move your knees though the pain may lessen after a rest. Hard swelling caused by extra bony growths or soft swelling caused by extra fluid could also appear due to this condition.

Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that occurs when the immune system of the body attacks its own tissues. This condition can happen at any joint of the body, including the knee joints. The pain from rheumatoid can be severe and chronic even when it may just come and go sporadically.

Infectious arthritis
Your knee becomes infected with swelling and redness appearing, as well as the pain. Symptoms may even include a fever. There is usually no injury, damage, or other traumatic event occurring before an infectious arthritis.
Gout
This is a type of arthritis that lead to hot, redness, and severe pain in the knee. Gout happens when your body produces uric acid which creates crystals in your joints. Gout can decrease your range of motion, or even cause immobilization.
Knee injuries
Injuries can happen to the knee, causing damage to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, or cartilages.
ACL injury
ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. ACL is one of the four ligaments that connect the shinbone and thighbone, creating the knee joint. An ACL injury occurs when the ligament is torn or overstretched. ACL injury is more seen in sports players such as football players, basketball players due to sudden changes in directional movements which the ligament cannot handle.
Broken bones
Fractures are common. You can get fractures when you fall, in a traffic accident, sport-related injuries, or in a fight. Broken bones can lead to pain in the knee and the fractures can be treated by stabilizing the knee.
Torn meniscus
A meniscus is a cartilage located between shinbone and thighbone. Two meniscuses provide support to the knee, absorbing shock. It allows flexibly of movement without rubbing the bones together. The meniscus can be torn due to sudden actions.
Mechanical problems
Mechanical problems can lead to knee pain.
Kneecap dislocation
Kneecap dislocation appears when a bone called patella (triangular bone) comes out of its place. The patella bone covers the front of the knee so this condition usually occurs in the front of the legs. Common symptoms are pain and difficulty in moving.
Hip or foot pain
Hip or foot pain can make you change the way you walk. Stress is not distributed equally to the two knees thus causing the knees to be even more painful.
