Among adults, the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age, with the older people at highest risk.
There are two things that should be priorities during this pandemic.
- Do everything reasonable to not get infected with the virus in the first place!
- Strengthen your immune system and improve your general health.
Avoiding infection in the first place becomes even more paramount with increasing age and the generally unwell people. Severe illness means that the person with COVID-19 may require hospitalization, intensive care or a ventilator to help them breathe. Otherwise there may be risks of them even dying.
Risk for Severe Illness Increases with Age
As you get older, your risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases. For example, people in their 50s are at higher risk than people in their 40s. Similarly, people in their 60s or 70s are, in general, at higher risk than those in their 50s. The greatest risk for severe illness from COVID-19 is among those aged 85 or older.
Older people need to take greater care to not get infected. Family members of older people must also be very careful as they may spread the virus to the elders if they get infected themselves.
There are also other factors that can increase the risk of severe illness, such as in those having underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer. By understanding the factors that put you at an increased risk, you can make decisions about the kind of precautions to take in your daily life.
Things you can do to strengthen immunity
1) Exercise — virtually every doctor at ACC regularly exercises. Besides that, we strongly encourage all of our patients to exercise as well. Cardiovascular exercise is associated with reduced emotional stress, increased feelings of well-being and measurable immunity.
2) Eat a healthy diet. Reduce or eliminate sugar. A healthy diet can really improve the immune system. Avocados, oily fishes, lean meet and nuts will support your immune system
3) Supplement: Vitamins D3, C, and B-complex, have all been shown to boost immunity and help lower stress.
4) Try to reduce stress. In this time of feeling concern, fear and stress will have a tremendous negative effect on the immune system.
5) Reduce pain. If you are suffering from pain, visit a good chiropractor, as reduction of pain = reduction of stress = better immunity.

6) Get adequate sleep. Having adequate sleep is associated with a better immune response and better health in general.
In general, good hygiene and social distancing can dramatically improve your chance of not catching Covid. This becomes increasingly more important with each decade of age.
The elderly and generally unwell are most at risk — therefore much care must be taken to keep them out of harm’s way.
All of us should take the time and right steps to be as strong and healthy as possible, in case we are infected.
