“Sexual activity” is an essential need for both men and women, and it is also an activity that is closely related to physical health. Therefore, many people wonder what to do when frequent intercourse causes back pain. In the following article, ACC will help you answer this question!
Does frequent intercourse cause back pain?
The answer is Yes, and the condition of frequent intercourse causing lower back pain is common in both men and women. In this case, you may experience pain on both the left and right sides, or in the middle of the spine.
Accordingly, those prone to back pain after “lovemaking” can be:
- Middle-aged people with lumbar spondylosis.
- Office workers.
- Long-distance drivers.
- People who frequently carry heavy objects.
Reasons for back pain during intercourse
The condition of frequent sexual intercourse causing back pain can be due to several reasons related to medical conditions, sexual positions, etc. Specifically, as follows:
Musculoskeletal Diseases
Back pain after intercourse can be a sign of musculoskeletal or spinal conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, ankylosing spondylitis, lumbar spondylosis, to name a few. The condition can worsen if not treated promptly and properly.
Sexual Positions
Back pain symptoms can occur if the couple performs difficult positions that cause damage to the ligaments and spine. If you continue to maintain these positions frequently, it will make the back pain more severe.
Full Body Muscle Stiffness
Back pain after intercourse in men can be due to full body muscle stiffness. This is a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs when men ejaculate. At this time, the lower back and pelvic floor muscles contract strongly, making men prone to back pain after intimacy with their partner.
Gynecological Diseases
After “making love,” if women often have back pain accompanied by signs such as lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or burning pain they are likely to have gynecological diseases. Specifically, several gynecological diseases can cause back pain after intercourse in women, such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and pelvic inflammatory disease.
What should be done to reduce back pain after intercourse?
To soothe back pain after sexual activity, you can apply some of the following solutions:
Rest and Apply Warm Compresses
After intercourse, you need to let your body rest to recover energy and avoid strenuous activity. In addition, you should choose positions that help your body relax such as:
Lie on your side and use a pillow between your legs to support the pelvis, reducing the pressure on the spine.
Lie on your back and place a thin pillow under your knees to help reduce back pain.
In addition, you can also use a hot pack placed on the painful area of the back for about 15-20 minutes to help ease muscle spasm/contraction in the back and increase blood circulation.
Back Massage
Getting a back massage can soothe back pain after sexual intercourse. You can ask your partner or a loved one to perform a massage according to the following steps:
- Step 1: Gently rub both sides of your lower back with warm oil, then massage along your spine for about 1 minute to soothe tense muscles.
- Step 2: Apply pressure with your middle fingers to the spinous processes of the lumbar vertebrae for approximately 1 minute.
- Step 3: Sit with your back straight and your feet perpendicular to your thighs. Have someone gently massage your lower back to locate the most painful point, then apply firm pressure there for 1 minute.
- Step 4: Place both hands around your lower back, with your thumbs on your back and the other fingers on your abdomen. Then, while firmly massaging your back muscles with your thumbs for about 2 minutes, simultaneously flex and extend your lumbar spine.
Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise not only strengthens the body, but also enhances the flexibility of the musculoskeletal system, thereby reducing back pain after sexual activity. Accordingly, you can take part in suitable sports that help relieve back pain such as cycling, yoga, walking or swimming, with intensities best suited to your endurance.
Seek Medical Attention and Get treatment
If your back pain does not alleviate, you should seek medical evaluation at the earliest point as this may serve as a harbinger for skeletal or muscular system related complications..
